Bayhorse Gazebos & Barns Inspires Another Great Solution

This 2-car garage with a second story will double as an apartment for Sue Sonnenberg’s father-in-law. 

A simple search for a shed has evolved into an incredible solution for Sue Sonnenberg and her family – thanks to Gerry Thorpe and Bayhorse Gazebos & Barns.

Sue and her husband, who is a collector of antique and muscle cars, made the trip to Bayhorse on Rt. 199 east of Red Hook. When they arrived, they saw much more than sheds, and their minds started working.

“We saw garages and took notice of a 2-car garage with a second story and we thought – ‘what a great idea,’ ” she said. Their idea was to make the second story into an apartment for her husband’s father, to whom they wanted to be closer.

“We thought - wouldn't it be great to have him living right next door to us!” said Sue.

The first step was going to see officials at the Town of Wappinger and inquire about the steps they needed to take to make their dream a reality.

Then they started working with Thorpe and Bayhorse. “Gerry stood right by our sides to ensure that everything was done according to the specifications and provided the Town with all the necessary plans, attended the meetings and walked us through every step of the way,” said Sue.

The building materials were delivered to their property and then the Amish workers arrived to put it together. “They completed the work in just two days. We couldn’t be happier,” said Sue. “The building is beautiful and structurally sound.”

She added, “We are continuing to complete the apartment for my husband's dad and he is so excited just at the thought that he can live right next door to his family!”

Sue said the project has been a learning experience. “Gerry's expertise, guidance, support and team of wonderful and helpful employees all made it happen! Gerry is a man of his word and has seen this through from the very beginning to the end.
